Solar end-of-life, planned from first site visit to final certificate

SolarCycle Africa helps IPPs, asset owners and the wider industry in South Africa turn panel retirement into a planned, priced and documented process, with the materials recovered and returned to industry.

Rooted in metal management, with Tier-1 recycling capability (for example Stena Recycling, subject to agreement) and chain-of-custody records for every tonne.

Utility-scale plants

REIPPPP plants built from 2013 pass 20 years of operation through the 2030s. Their project agreements and environmental authorisations already require removal and land rehabilitation.

Rooftop and C&I

The load-shedding boom from 2022 added a larger, more scattered fleet. Storm damage, defects and repowering bring part of that volume forward, well before panels reach an average life of around 27.5 years.2

An obligation with no plan

Project agreements and environmental authorisations require removal and land rehabilitation, but few portfolios have a defined route, partner or budget for it.

A cost nobody has priced

Decommissioning sits on balance sheets as an open-ended liability. Lenders, insurers and buyers increasingly want to see how it will be handled.

Tightening expectations

Producer-responsibility rules are spreading (the EU WEEE Directive, South Africa's 2020 EPR regulations), and ESG reporting needs traceable outcomes, not informal scrap channels.

Clean energy should have a clean exit

Almost everything in a solar panel can go back into industry. Handled by metal-recovery specialists, the materials stay in use instead of going to landfill, and their value helps offset the cost of doing it properly.

Materials back into industry

Glass, aluminium, copper, silicon and silver go to qualified metal-recovery partners and on to new products.

Out of landfill and informal scrap

A defined route replaces ad-hoc disposal, so panels and their components are handled safely and accounted for.

Traceable ESG outcomes

Chain-of-custody records and recycling certificates for every tonne, ready for lenders, regulators and sustainability reports.

Local green jobs

Steady, predictable volumes let partners invest in South African logistics and processing, creating skilled work close to the sites.

What will your plant cost to retire?

Five short steps give an indicative view of your end-of-life position. Gross cost, potential recovery value and the net obligation are kept separate: recovery only offsets cost once a verified off-take or floor contract is in place.

Your system

Size the fleet by capacity, module count or household consumption.

The same plant, run through a favourable, base and stressed case. Pick a scenario to see when modules leave service and how a lifecycle reserve would build against the exposure. Every figure updates from the calculator above.

Indicative model on industry benchmark defaults, not a quote or an offer. The favourable case flexes costs by −20% and commodity values by +15%; the stressed case flexes costs by +30% and values by −30%. Replace the defaults with site data and written quotes to remove the provisional flag.

Four steps from first look to final certificate

We stay on your side of the table throughout, scheduling the work around your repowering or decommissioning programme.

  1. Assess

We map your sites, panel types, volumes, condition, timing and contractual obligations, and give you a clear view of your end-of-life position.

  2. Plan & negotiate

We build the end-of-life plan, run a competitive process with qualified recyclers and negotiate price, liability, logistics and reporting on your behalf.

  3. Execute

Safe removal, packing, logistics and processing through qualified partners, scheduled around your programme.

  4. Recover & certify

Materials go back into industry, and you receive chain-of-custody and recycling certificates for every tonne.

Built to solve the problem for the long term, not one site at a time

Aggregated scale

We pool volumes across owners and regions, making professional recovery viable where a single site would not be.

On your side of the table

We are paid mainly from the improvement we secure over your current disposal route, so our incentives match yours.

Metal-recovery expertise

Rooted in metal management, with Tier-1 recycling capability (for example Stena Recycling, subject to agreement).

Audit-ready governance

Chain-of-custody records and certificates that lenders, insurers and regulators can rely on.

Local capacity over time

Steady, predictable volumes let partners invest in South African logistics and processing, creating skilled green jobs.

Honest economics

Recovery value offsets cost, but we never promise a return. Where recycling is a net cost, we make it lower, known and documented.
